Diatraea saccharalis, the sugarcane borer, is a species of moth of the family Crambidae. It was described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1794. It is native to the Caribbean, Central America, and the warmer parts of South America south to northern Argentina. It was introduced to Louisiana in about 1855, and has since spread to the other Gulf Coast states. The wingspan is 18 C28 mm for males and 27 C39 mm. The larvae are considered a pest on sugarcane and other crops such as corn, rice, sorghum and Sudangrass. Other food plants include Sorghum halepense, Paspalum, Panicum, Holcus and Andropogon.

Morphological Features

Adult. Wingspan 18–39 mm (males generally smaller than females; females 26–30 mm). Forewings brownish, thinly striated with dark brown, with two diffuse dark brown oblique lines running from the dorsum at mid length to the apex (more strongly marked in males), and with marginal dark brown spots between veins. Hindwings not described. Head, thorax, and abdomen not described in detail. Male genitalia with sternite VIII bearing a broad transverse pocket mostly concealing the ostium bursae; lamella antevaginalis composed of a pair of hardened, posteriorly projecting extensions that may cover or surround the genital opening. Female genitalia with cuticle laterad of lamella postvaginalis wrinkled and/or densely setose, contrasting with a smooth and glabrous medial area; lamella postvaginalis with a distinct pair of elevated transverse ridges posterad, not reaching posterior margin of sternite VIII; corpus bursae glabrous, pear-shaped, slightly longer than large.
