The proposed amendment seeks to: 1. Expand the list of Raw materials permitted to be used in foods. Add commodities such as Allomyrina dichotoma, Protaetia brevitarsis, Kajime (Ecklonia cava), the bulbil of East Asian mountain yam (Dioscorea batatas Decaisne) and Weissella cibaria into the list. 2. Establish and revise the maximum residue limits for two newly registered pesticides (Cyclaniliprole and Pyflubumide) in foods, and expand the range of target agricultural products for 90 pesticides. 3. Etablish and revise the maximum residue limits for certain veterinary drugs (Cyproheptadine, Iodohydroxy quinoline sulfonic acid and Flumethasone) in foods. 4. Modify the terminologies and wordings in the Standards and Specifications for Foods. Establish definitions for certain terminologies such as infants and children.

The Republic of Korea is proposing to amend the Standards and Specifications for the Food Additives. 1) The standards and specifications of the following food additive are newly established: Cross-linked sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. 2) The definition or description of following four food additives are revised: Carbon dioxide, silicon dioxide, â-glucanase, Kuk. 3) The specifications including test methods for identity and purity of 17 food additives are revised: Monosodium L-glutamate, dammar gum, calcium oxide, steviol glycoside, rice bran wax, oxystearin, quillaia extract, silicon resin, magnesium carbonate, calcium carbonate, tert-butylhydroquinone, polysorbate 80, polyisobutylene, aluminium potassium sulfate, enzymatically modified stevia, mixed preparations containing carbonates, mixed preparation containing sodium saccharin. 4) The standards for the use of the following 12 food additives are revised: Sorbic acid, potassium sorbate, calcium sorbate, sodium saccharin, calcium oxide, calcium stearoyl lactylate, magnesium L-lactate, potassium lactate, potassium carbonate anhydrous, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyethylene glycol.

The proposed amendments seek to: 1. Combine the standards and specifications for foods and livestock products; 2. Reorganize compilation system of the Standards and Specifications for Foods; 3. Adjust the classification of food types based on the content of the raw materials and additive ingredients; 4. Simplify and reclassify food types; 5. Clarify the requirements for raw materials; 6. Add metabolites to residue definition for veterinary drugs; 7. Rationalize storage and distribution standards; 8. Improve microorganisms and introduce statistical concepts; 9. Modify terminologies and wordings such as refining the definitions of food type; 10. Revise the methods of sampling and sample handling; 11. Establish and revise the general test methods; and 12. According to the Contagious Animal Disease Prevention Act, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs of the Republic of Korea has established the Import Health Requirements for Cloven-hoofed Animals for Display in a Zoo (Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Notice No. 2016-67, 20 July 2016). The proposed amendment seeks to: 1. Define self-cloning microorganism; 2. Exempt self-cloning microorganism from safety assessment, if it is destined for contained use without antibiotic resistance gene; 3. Shorten the standard sample quantity of the host microorganism and its genetically modified strain to submit for safety assessment; 4. Shorten the document list to submit for safety assessment with a document that shows removal of genetically modified microorganism and newly introduced gene within final product.
