Spodoptera marima

Yellowstriped Armyworm

Spodoptera ornithogalli (yellow-striped armyworm, cotton cutworm) is a moth of the family Noctuidae. When first discovered this particular species was thought to be the American representative of S. littoralis as the two species have very similar forms. However, S. ornithogalli is known to have much darker color body with sharper markings.

Morphological Features

Adult forewing coloration varies from brown ocher to dark brown intermixed with a pattern of cream-colored blotches. Hindwing is whitish with brownish scales at the apical border. Females have significantly larger forewing size (overall mean = 15.5 mm) than males (mean = 14.5 mm). The ovipositor region is covered with light scales; there are dark brown scales protracted as a tuft from the ovipositor region. Male hindwing color is similar to that of the S. marima lectotype, with the border less marked, while the female hindwing has similar color to that of the S. ornithogalli lectotype.
