Ephysteris promptella, the ratoon shootborer, is a moth of the family Gelechiidae. It is a pantropical species, found in the warmer parts of the Old World tropics to Australia. It is widely distributed in southern Europe (ranging to Slovakia in the north). The wingspan is 8 C10 mm. Adults are greyish brown. The larvae feed on Andropogon, Oryza, Panicum, Saccharum officinarum, Sorghum, Stipa, Triticum and Zea mays. They bore the shoots of their host plant. Full-grown larvae reach a length of about 5 mm.

Morphological Features
Adult. Head, thorax and tegula covered with pale-grey, brown-tipped scales. Antenna with scape dark-brown, other antennal articles dark-grey, ringed with whitish. Forewing colour varies extensively from pale-grey to dark, almost black; forewing covered with grey, dark-tipped scales and mottled by ochreous scales along veins mainly; sometimes uniformly grey or black without any markings. Posterior margin of sternite VIII with triangular incision. Valva at most level with base of gnathos, evenly curved inwards, of equal width, pointed apically; sacculus about two-thirds length of valva, expanded apically; phallus slightly inflated basally, distal part curved, 1.5 times length of basal part, apex abruptly cut.
