Spiroplasma citri
TaxID: 2133
Basic Information
Spiroplasma citri
Stubborn Disease of Citrus
Spiroplasma citri is a bacterium species and the causative agent of Citrus stubborn disease. Its genome has been partially sequenced. The restriction enzyme SciNI, with the cutting site 5' GCGC / 3' CGCG, can be found in S. citri. Euscelis incisa can be used as a vector of the bacterium to experimentally infect white clover (Trifolium repens). Spiroplasma citri is a partially sequenced, Gram-positive plant pathogenic mollicute which has a wide host range.

Morphological Features
Cells are helical, wall-less, and motile filaments. The smallest viable cell is a two-turn elementary helix. Cells grow by increasing in length and dividing by constriction, typically liberating two-turn elementary helices from a parental helix of about four turns. In liquid culture, cells exhibit a helical, motile morphology, whereas in agar cultures they appear as nonmotile, nonhelical filaments and round bodies. No motility organelles are present, but a layer of surface projections exists on the bounding membrane. Loss of helicity occurs in old broth cultures. Nonhelical strains share the same ultrastructural features as helical cells but lack a specific membrane protein.
