Ceratitis capitata
TaxID: 7213
Basic Information
Ceratitis capitata
Medfly, Mediterranean fruit fly
Ceratitis capitata, commonly known as the Mediterranean fruit fly or medfly, is a yellow-and-brown fly native to sub-Saharan Africa. It has no near relatives in the Western Hemisphere and is considered to be one of the most destructive fruit pests in the world. There have been occasional medfly infestations in California, Florida, and Texas that require extensive eradication efforts to prevent the fly from establishing itself in the United States. C. capitata is the most economically important fruit fly species because of both its ability to survive cooler climates more successfully than most other fruit fly species and its ability to inhabit more than 200 tropical fruits and vegetables to which it causes severe destruction and degradation. The practices that are used to eradicate the medfly after its introduction into a new environment can be extremely difficult and expensive, but infestation of C. capitata lowers crop yields and induces costly sorting processes for fresh fruits and vegetables.

Morphological Features
Third instar larvae are medium-sized muscidiform, 3.9–8.7 mm long, with a mandibular tooth that is ventrally grooved and a minute subapical mandibular tooth that may be present or absent. They possess 8–12 oral ridges; accessory plates are absent. The anterior spiracle has 9–12 tubules arranged in a single sinuous row, with a cylindrical base approximately half as wide as the apical width (distal width 0.16–0.19 mm). Posterior spiracular rimae are about 3 times longer than wide (0.07–0.08 mm long), and spiracular processes are mostly unbranched with narrow bases. Dorsal spinules are present on segments T1–T3, forming an encircling band on T1, while on T2–T3 the ventral spinulose area is separated from the dorsal area; dorsal spinules are absent on A1–A8. A caudal ridge is present, and anal lobes are entire or grooved with subequal lobes
