Tephritis arnicae

Tephritis arnicae is a species of picture-winged fly of the family Tephritidae, which are variously known as fruit-flies (North America) or gall flies (Britain and Ireland). The larvae feed in the flowerheads of species of Arnica montana, Doronicum grandiflorum, D. austriacum and D. hungaricum. It is found in the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, south to France, Bulgaria, and Ukraine.

Morphological Features

Body length 5.5–6.1 mm, wing length 4.5–5.0 mm. Wing pattern reticulate and dark, including anal lobe, with numerous hyaline spots and dots; subapical area of cell with two wide dark spots at apices of R4+5 and M usually connected to each other and remaining dark pattern by a narrow peduncle, forming wide apical fork. Postocular setae black and white; ocellar, medial vertical, anterior and posterior orbital and frontal setae black and acuminate. Posterior orbital and posterior notopleural setae black. Thorax densely microtrichose, microtrichia gray to ochreous yellow; setulae on mesonotum mainly black, with a few white ones. Fore femur with 2 rows of white posterodorsal and one row of brown posteroventral setae. Abdomen: tergites entirely microtrichose, mostly with black setulae (white setulae on first abdominal tergite) and white marginal setae.
