Gynaikothrips

Body finely reticulate. Head longer than wide; eyes normal; postocular setae developed or reduced, sometimes with 2 pairs; maxillary stylets short, retracted into basal one third of head length, close together. Antennae rather long; segment III with 1 sensorium (rarely 2), segment IV with 3 sensoria (sometimes 3+1). Pronotum with major setae variable, epimerals always developed; notopleural sutures complete or incomplete; pronotum often with twisted transverse striae forming rounded or oval spots. Fore tarsal tooth well-developed in males, smaller or absent in females. Metanotum with a group of 4 or more pairs of small setae anterolateral to median pair. Forewings present; tergites II–VII with 2 pairs of wing-retaining setae, usually with accessory wing-retaining setae. Male tergite IX setae S2 capitate and about 0.5 as long as S1, or acute and about 0.3 as long as S1. Tube less than 3.5 times as long as basal width in female (some species). Prosternum lacks basantra.
