Plant Bug

Orthotylus is a genus of bugs from the family Miridae. There are more than 300 described species worldwide. The sheer number of species has led to the recognition of subgenera and groups, some of which may be promoted to genus level. Yamsunaga recognized the genus as non-monophyletic, and without consistent diagnostic characteristics. Most of the species are plant feeders, some of them attacking important crops; however, some species also prey on the larvae of lepidoptera and diptera, as well as on psyllids and aphids.

Morphological Features

Orthotylus species are relatively small, elongate ovoid, often bicolored green-brown to black. Dorsal vestiture consists of simple hairlike setae or a mix of simple and scalelike setae; color of setae may vary. Head with vertex ecarinate in some subgenera. Antennae with first segment sometimes red. Pronotum and hemelytra with simple setae. Legs simple. Male genitalia: pygophore without tergal processes (except in some subgenera); left paramere L-shaped with rounded sensory lobe and elongate angulate apophysis with small recurved apical hook; right paramere roughly C-shaped, often with clump of elongate setae on outer distal lobe. Endosoma with two arcuate, subequal endosomal spicules (PES and DES); secondary gonopore greatly elongate; phallotheca small with spiniferous patch distally. Female genitalia with interramal lobes. Body length and width not specified in evidence.
