Nemognatha

Body black with elytra dark blue-violet metallic and abdomen orange (variable: some females have abdomen black or dark; rare specimens have head almost completely reddish and pronotum dark-reddish, or temples and genae partially orange). Head very short; galeae quite short, reaching at most the anterior ventral angle of the eye. Pronotum may lack black spot. Elytra with scarcely depressed, sub-oval surface, distinct and denser punctuation, and dense different setae. Abdomen color variable in this group. In Old World, genus separated from Zonitis by elongate maxillary galea; in North America, separated by aedeagus structure.
