Basic Information

Alticini

Flea Beetles, flea beetles

The flea beetle is any small, jumping beetle of the leaf beetle family (Chrysomelidae) that is part of the tribe Alticini, which is part of the subfamily Galerucinae. Historically the flea beetles were classified as their own subfamily. Traditionally, the Alticini were separated from other Galerucinae by the presence of jumping hind legs, characterised by enlarged femora containing a spring structure allowing the flea beetles to jump. Recent phylogenetic studies suggest that jumping hind legs evolved multiple times in the Galerucinae, rather than once, and that several genera should be transferred between Alticini and Galerucinae sensu stricto (or Galerucini in some classifications).

Morphological Features

Alticini are small to medium-sized Coleoptera in the family Chrysomelidae, subfamily Galerucinae. The jumping apparatus is localized in the hind legs and formed by the femur, tibia, femoro-tibial joint, modified metafemoral extensor tendon, extensor ligament, tibial flexor sclerite, and extensor and flexor muscles. The metafemoral extensor tendon has a dorsal lobe and ventral lobe; the extended arm of the dorsal lobe may be moderately elongate and slightly depressed. The hind tibia bears a simple, moderately elongate apical spur. The pronotum is often sub-trapezoidal, distinctly transverse, and rounded laterally. Frontal grooves are distinctly impressed, extending from the upper ocular margin to the antennal socket. Antennae are slightly shorter than half the body length. Elytra are indistinctly elongate, entirely covering the pygidium, strongly arcuate laterally, and jointly rounded apically. The surface may have punctures that are slightly elongate and deeply impressed on a sub-smooth surface. The aedeagus is distinctly and evenly curved in lateral view. The spermatheca has a sub-cylindrical basal part, narrower towards the distal part, with a thin, uncoiled ductus.
