Lost Flat-body, Purple Carrot-seed Moth

Depressaria depressana, Blunt's flat-body or the purple carrot-seed moth, is a moth of the family Depressariidae. It is found in most of Europe. It is also found in the Near East, North Africa, the eastern part of the Palearctic realm and since 2009 in North America. The wingspan is 14 C20 mm. Adults are on wing from March to May. There is one generation in the north. There are two generations in the northern Caucasus and up to three generations in the south of Ukraine. The larvae feed on Daucus carota, Pimpinella, Pastinaca, Seseli and Peucedanum oreoselinum.

Morphological Features

Adult. Head, labial palps, mesothorax and tegulae contrastingly pale, cream-white. Forewings predominantly rufous brown with very short dark brown streaks along the veins; North American specimens have forewings almost uniformly dark grey with a little pale grey suffusion in the distal half, contrasting with the pale head and thorax. Tegulae entirely dark brown. In male, sacculus with a short, smooth recurved process protruded from its apical end about one-third the height of the valva; endophallus with a bundle of long, thin cornuti tightly packed together. In female, sternite 8 elongate-trapezoid; antrum more or less square with slightly indented posterior margin; ductus bursae thickly sclerotized with one loop.
