Basic Information
Anthonomus rubi
Strawberry Blossom Weevil, strawberry blossom weevil
Anthonomus rubi, the strawberry-blossom weevil or strawberry blossom weevil, is a species of weevil found in Europe and western Asia. It feeds on plants of the family Rosaceae and is an important pest of strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duchesne) and raspberry (Rubus idaeus L.). Morphological Features
Larva. Body length not given. Head capsule with one short, straight, rather stout vertical seta (vs) about half as long as width of rostrum at base, plus one very slender orbital seta (os) and one superorbital seta (sos). Frons with five dorsal epicranial setae (des): des1 and des2 medium, des3 and des5 long, des4 fine and short. Clypeus trapezium-shaped with two clypeal setae (cls) near anterior margin, cls1 slightly longer than cls2, and one clypeal sensillum between them. Labrum with three labral rods (lrs): lrs1 and lrs2 subequal, lrs3 about half as long as lrs1. Mandibles strongly sclerotized, triangular, with two apical teeth; mandibular setae mds1 and mds2 medium, slightly different in length. Maxillary mala with five dorsal malar setae (dms) and five ventral malar setae (vms) in most specimens, but occasionally six dms. Postlabium with three postlabial setae (pms): pms1 and pms3 short, about one-third as long as very long pms2. Thoracic and abdominal setae hairlike, yellowish, from very long to minute. Pronotum with 11 pronotal setae (prns) of unequal length (prns1 short, prns6 very short, others long to very long), two very long pleural setae (ps), and two eusternal setae (eus) (short and minute). Meso- and metanotum each with three medium dorsal setae (d) on small flat tubercles, length decreasing toward midline. Abdominal tergites I–VIII with three distinct dorsal setae (d); d3 on Ab5–8 at bases of pointed tubercles increasing in size posteriorly. Spiracles bicameral: prothoracic spiracle with 8–10 annuli, abdominal spiracles with 6–8 annuli; one pair on prothorax, eight pairs laterally on Ab1–8. Urogomphi paired, sclerotized, elongated, straight, close together throughout length, with one very fine short ventral seta.
