Moth

Phragmatobia is a genus of moths in the subfamily Arctiinae described by James Francis Stephens in 1828. Many tiger-moth species of small and medium size were described within this genus. However, only a few are related to the type species.

Morphological Features

Adult. Forewing ground colour brown with reddish suffusion, darker in male; pattern represented by black rounded discal spot on bases of veins M1–3, and zigzagged, diffuse blackish subterminal fascia. Hindwing ground colour intense salmon pink, often with intense black suffusion medially and distally. Antenna off-white proximally and medially, blackish distally, serrulate in male, filiform in female. Abdomen brownish-red with black spots on each segment dorsally and laterally. Male genitalia: valva elongate and narrow, with almost parallel margins, distally tapered; phallus heavily sclerotised, narrow, as long as tegumen-vinculum complex, with elongate and apically rounded coecum; vesica with granulose scobination and semiglobular dorsal subbasal diverticulum covered with short, robust, basally dilated cornuti. Female genitalia: antrum longer than ovipositor, heavily sclerotised, dorso-ventrally flattened, with convex lateral margins; ductus bursae heavily sclerotised, dorso-ventrally flattened, nearly as wide as width of abdomen; papilla analis trapezoidal with rounded corners, weakly setose; posterior section of corpus bursae heavily sclerotised and rugose; appendix bursae originates postero-ventrally, proximally conical, sclerotised and rugose, with strongly dilated, elliptical membranous distal section.
