Prosapia simulans

Adults exhibit sexual dimorphism and geographic variation in coloration. Males from Colombia have head, pronotum, scutellum, and wings light brown; pronotum and wings crossed by transverse bands of light yellow. Females from Colombia have head, pronotum, scutellum, and wings dark brown, with pronotal and wing bands very reduced or absent. Specimens from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Costa Rica have head, pronotum, scutellum, and wings black, regardless of sex. Both sexes possess the typical Prosapia pronotal band, same color as the wing bands. The pronotum is crossed by one band, and the wings are crossed by two transverse bands, which are yellow to orange and may be broad or narrow, complete or incomplete. Males have two long genital shield structures ending distally in a heavily sclerotized point; in ventral view a fold and parameres supported on the genital shield are visible.
