Scolytodes

Scolytodes is recognized by the sharply carinate lateral edges of the pronotum, separated procoxae, and protibiae with two large lateral teeth near the distal end that appear unsocketed (but are socketed teeth embedded in cuticle). The eyes are entire, weakly sinuate, or emarginate. The antennal funicle is 5- or 6-segmented (including the pedicel). The pronotum may be entirely smooth or strongly asperate on the anterior part. A unique feature is the distinct pattern of erect pronotal setae along the anterior margin and each hind corner, and sometimes also just mesal to its lateral margin. The submentum is normally flat and at the same level as the gena, but some species have an obliquely impressed submentum area. Ventral setae vary from long and simple to short and scale-like. In most species, the female frons is distinctly ornamented with various patterns of setae and impressions, while the male has a nearly glabrous and convex frons.
