Dactylopius
TaxID: 38116
Basic Information
Dactylopius
True Cochineal Bug
Dactylopius is a genus of insect in the superfamily Coccoidea, the scale insects. It is the only genus in the family Dactylopiidae. These insects are known commonly as cochineals, a name that also specifically refers to the best-known species, the cochineal (Dactylopius coccus). The cochineal is an insect of economic and historical importance as a main source of the red dye carmine. It has reportedly been used for this purpose in the Americas since the 10th century. Genus Dactylopius is also important because several species have been used as agents of biological pest control, and because several are known as invasive species.

Head rather pointed anteriorly; median crest distinct and long, extending posteriorly well past posterior margin of ocular sclerite; ocular sclerite without setae or striations. Antennae 1100–1175 μm long (ratio of total body length to antennal length 1:0.57); flagellar segments each with many short, stout fleshy setae, a few hair-like setae, and 1–5 capitate setae. Wings hyaline, subequal to total body length, width less than half length (ratio length to width 1:0.42); alar setae absent. Legs: tarsal digitules subequal to length of claw with small capitate apices; claws long and thin, nearly twice width of tarsus, almost straight, without denticle; claw digitules subequal to length of claw with small capitate apices. Abdomen not attenuated; segments I–VII tergites and sternites unsclerotised except for narrow sclerotisations on anterior margins of segments I and II; glandular pouches present with 2 very short, truncated glandular pouch setae.
