Glyptotermes is a genus of termite in the family Kalotermitidae. With 127 species worldwide as of 2013, is the family's most speciose genus, and the second most speciose in the New World after Cryptotermes. Entomologist Rudolf H. Scheffrahn argued in 2018 that the paucity of Glyptotermes records from throughout much of the Caribbean Basin and South America was caused by a field sampling bias toward non-kalotermitids. The first records of this genus from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Honduras, Paraguay, Peru, and much of the Lesser Antilles were provided by Scheffrahn in 2019. Glyptotermes species have a rather high wood moisture requirement and, therefore, are not found in arid parts of the Neotropics and are likewise, not economically important. Although the imago morphology is quite conserved, the head capsules of Glyptotermes soldiers are variously adorned with protuberances and rugosities, and robust mandibles that facilitate their identification.

Morphological Features
Head capsule subrectangular, cylindrical, more or less elongated, some species with a phragmotic head. Head distinctly or faintly bilobed with V- or U-shaped depression. Frons deeply bilobed, with steep angle from vertex. Frontal furrow between lobes extends to middle of frons. Genal horns acute, visible from above, span narrowest part of head capsule. Eyes medium small, dark gray, occupying about one-third the distance midway between vertex and genal margin. Antennae with second, third, and fourth articles subequal in length. Mandibles robust, form about one third of total head length; left mandible with incurved margin between first and second marginal tooth; right mandible with posterior margin of second marginal tooth slightly longer than molar plate. Pronotum more than twice as wide as long, widest near front third. Forewing membrane hyaline, with numerous nodulations; media sclerotised, runs close and parallel to radial sector to wing tip. Front tibia with apical spur not as enlarged as in Calcaritermes. Head and pronotum light brown, integument faintly imbricate, with widely scattered fine short setae.
