Metachroma

Flea Beetle

Metachroma is a genus of leaf beetles in the subfamily Eumolpinae. It is distributed from Ontario, Canada to Mendoza, Argentina, including the Antilles (where a large number of species occur). It has also been suggested that the genus extends to the Pacific Islands, though this is not confirmed. There are about 140 described species in Metachroma, 40 of which are found north of Mexico. An extinct species is also known from the Eocene of the United States. The name of the genus comes from the Ancient Greek ??? ("different") and ? ? ? ("color"), referring to the variations in color pattern found within many of the species.

Morphological Features

Body length of female 4.1 mm. Hind femora not greatly enlarged compared to front and middle legs. Pronotum with well developed lateral and posterior marginal beads; pronotum light brown with four dark spots, these sometimes coalescing to form only two spots or a somewhat reticulate pattern, or rarely weakly indicated or absent. Elytral punctures arranged in regular striae; elytra not with isolated dark spots or a reticulate pattern; elytra vittate, with median dark spots on disc close to suture, pale margins of pronotum and scutellum. Claws bifid with relatively short inner appendix.
