Larvae: head capsule weakly dorsoventrally flattened, strongly constricted before occipital foramen; epicranial stem one-fourth to one third head capsule length; frons and dorsal portion of epicranial plates weakly to moderately rugose; clypeus trapezoidal, often weakly transversely raised medially; labrum with two transverse rows of six to fourteen erect setae medially and subapically; epipharynx with stout spiniform setae along anterior margin, an anterior cluster of four to six spinules, a subanterior transverse row of four small spinules subtended by two spinose setae, and posterior cluster of six to eight small spinules. Integument strongly sclerotized, light tan to nearly black. Prothoracic tergum 1.2× or more length of meso- or metaterga, with anterior transverse striated band and lateral granulated band; prothoracic leg slightly longer and much thicker than meso- and metathoracic legs; dorsal surface of prothoracic femur with faint basal sclerotized band; 8–38 socketed spines on pygidial margin; pygopods short, subconical, each with erect setae. Adults: body length 10–50 mm, wingless, head not deeply inserted; black or dark brown, rarely with reddish stripe on dorsal midline of elytra; abdomen with visible membrane between sternites III and IV; procoxae globose, meso- and metacoxae transverse and separated by at least width of a coxa.
