Scolytus scolytus, the larger European elm bark beetle or large elm bark beetle, is a 3.5 C6 mm long bark beetle species. It is of significant importance in Eurasia as a vector of Dutch elm disease.

Morphological Features
Adult. Body length 3.5–5.5 mm. Pronotum and elytra dark brown to black; legs and antennae lighter. Frons in male flat with long yellow hair tufts on anal segment; female frons convex and nearly bald. Pronotum broader in female than in male. Elytra with distinct punctures in striae; interstriae with fine punctures and sparse short hairs. Abdomen with anal segment in male bearing a conspicuous brush of long yellow setae; female without such brush. Surface sculpture: head and pronotum finely punctate; elytral striae with rows of distinct punctures, interstriae with finer punctation. Pubescence: sparse on elytra, more evident on head and pronotum in male.
