Kalotermitidae

TaxID: 46562

Basic Information

Kalotermitidae

Dampwood Termites, powder-post termites

Kalotermitidae (drywood termites), are a basal family with a roughly cosmopolitan circumtropical distribution. With 21 genera and 419 species, it is the second most diverse termite family after the Termitidae. The majority of members are functionally specialists of sound wood - though not necessarily dry wood. Hence, while not all Kalotermitidae taxa are commonly referred to as drywood termites, the name is commonly used to refer to the family itself. The family contains notable pest taxa such as Cryptotermes brevis and Incisitermes minor.

Morphological Features

Family diagnosis based on imago-worker mandible: left mandible with apical tooth shorter than marginal teeth; left mandible with three distinct marginal teeth, third marginal tooth well developed; right mandible with second marginal tooth well developed, its posterior margin concave. Soldier head subquadrangular to subrectangular, with fontanelle located in a small depression, with two flat longitudinal ridges in front of the opening forming a faint groove leading to clypeal base; soldier head devoid of frontal projection. Imago-worker right mandible with well-developed subsidiary tooth at base of first and second marginal teeth, anterior margin angular, posterior margin curved. Hind wing with Sc absent (presumably fused to C); M poorly sclerotized, diverging from Rs apical to but near basal scale, then arcing anteriorly to terminate into Rs beyond wing midlength; R1 terminates into costal margin in basal half of wing, often around one-third wing length, well prior to tangent at which M fuses with Rs.
