Morphological Features

Nymphs have an oval-shaped body, reddish color that intensifies with development. Body length averages 1.03 mm in second instar, 0.71 mm in first instar. Fifth instar nymphs show dimorphic wing pads: short wing pads generate brachypterous females, long wing pads generate macropterous males. Individuals with short wing pads have greater body length and rounded apical abdomen; those with long wing pads are smaller with tapered, elongated abdomen. Erect pale bristles present in all instars, denser in fifth instar. Wing pads in first instar reddish-brown, reaching second abdominal segment, average 0.17 mm. In later instars, wing pads dark brown, reaching third abdominal segment. Hind tibiae average length 0.31 mm in first instar. Pronotum length 0.15 mm in second instar, 0.20 mm in third instar. Egg flat, elongated, slightly curved, average length 0.66 cm, width 0.19 cm.
