Tomarus is a genus of scarab beetles in the subfamily Dynastinae, the rhinoceros beetles. They are native to the Americas, where they are distributed from the central United States to Argentina, and a few species occur in the Caribbean. The adult beetles are nocturnal and attracted to lights; the larvae generally remain in the soil, often feeding on plant roots. In order to identify species, the parameres of the male must be pulled out of the abdomen and examined. This process should be done carefully, because the parameres are quite fragile, "almost parchment-like".

Morphological Features
Species of Tomarus are recognized by a subtrapezoidal to subtriangular, attenuate clypeus that is bidentate and relatively narrow at the apex; pronotum with an apical tubercle and with a weak, subapical fovea in the Chilean species. Antenna with 10 antennomeres, club subequal in length to antennomeres 2–7. In lateral view, convex in male, weakly convex in female. Interocular width equals 3.0–3.3 transverse eye diameters. Pronotum surface with moderately large, dense punctures, anterior angles rugopunctate; anterior margin with small, median tubercle followed by a small, oval fovea (fovea narrower than distance between eyes). Venter: prosternal process long, columnar, thick, apex longitudinally oval; apex of prosternal process flat, longitudinally oval to subrectangular. Abdomen: apex of tergite IV with a triangular wide area with large, rounded tubercles forming 14–15 diagonal parallel lines. Mandible with 2 apical teeth and a lateral, narrowly rounded tooth.
