Small Tortoiseshell, small tortoiseshell
The small tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) is a colourful Eurasian butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. Adults feed on nectar and may hibernate over winter; in warmer climates they may have two broods in a season. While the dorsal surface of the wings is vividly marked, the ventral surface is drab, providing camouflage. Eggs are laid on the common nettle, on which the larvae feed.

Morphological Features
Adult body weight reaches maximum values at 20°C (1.5 mN). Pupal body length is 2.3 cm at 20°C. The antennal movement apparatus includes a head-scape joint comparable to a ball-and-socket joint; the scape is moved in various directions by four muscles of the head. The antenna, when in resting position, makes an angle of ca. [value not given] with the body axis. Active antennal movements are controlled by Böhm's bristles on the scape and pedicel. The Johnston's organ, Böhm's bristles, and antennal muscles are supplied by nerves arising in the deutocerebrum. The retina contains nine retinula cells per ommatidium; the two orientations of microvilli alternate regularly along the length of the rhabdom.
