Chirothrips

Body somewhat flattened dorsoventrally. Head small, produced anterior of compound eyes, variably prolonged in front of eyes, smaller than pronotum; with 2–6 pairs of short bristle-like or stout setae; usually with at least three pairs of ocellar setae and four pairs of postocular setae. Antenna 8-segmented, without microtrichia; segment I not enlarged, less than 2.5 times as wide as base of II; segment II symmetrical to asymmetrically angulate or produced anterolaterally, with small apical or subapical setae. Pronotum trapezoidal or subtrapezoidal, with two pairs of well-developed posteroangular setae and relatively few short discal setae. Mesonotum with median pair of setae situated medially, anterior campaniform sensilla present; bristle-like median setae far anterior of posterior margin. Metanotum with two pairs of setae near anterior margin, campaniform sensilla present. Forewings slender, first vein with long gap in setal row and two distal setae, second vein with four to five setae arranged irregularly. Legs with fore legs modified. Tergites and sternites with posteromarginal craspedum comprising elongate plates or lobes; sterna without discal setae; sternite II with two pairs of posteromarginal setae, sternites III–VII with three pairs. Abdominal posterior segments well developed, with long or short ovipositor.
