Hypoponera punctatissima

Pantropical mini-ponerine ant, Roger’s Ant

Hypoponera punctatissima, or Roger's ant, is a species of Ponerine ant native to Africa but now found worldwide as a tramp species. The ant is hypothesized to have spread so effectively due to humanity's use of horses as draft animals. The ant is closely related to Hypoponera ergatandria and bears several similarities, such as colony size and appearance.

Morphological Features

Worker: Head with a feeble longitudinal line running back along midline from frontal lobes to midlength of vertex. Eyes small but distinct, situated far forward on sides of head. Scapes, when laid straight back from their insertions, fail to reach or less commonly just touch midpoint of posterior margin of head in full-face view. Alate gyne: only alate females known from some records; no worker description available for this caste.
