Heliothrips haemorrhoidalis is a species of thrips in the family Thripidae. It is most commonly known as the greenhouse thrips, the glasshouse thrip or black tea thrips. This species of thrips was first described in 1833 by Bouch in Berlin, Germany. H. haemorrhoidalis also has many synonyms depending on where they were described from such as: H. adonidum Haliday, H. semiaureus Girault, H. abdominalis Reuter, H. angustior Priesner, H. ceylonicus Schultz, Dinurothrips rufiventris Girault. In New Zealand, H. haemorrhoidalis is one of the four species belonging to the subfamily Panchaetothripinae.

Morphological Features

Body color yellow (second instar larva). Antennal segment III with setae shorter than the length of the segment. Segment X with six anal setae shorter than the segment length. Adults exhibit variation: antennal segment II varies in color from brown to pale; antennal segment VI dark brown, variable, filling almost entire segment or only apical third. Mesonotum usually with equiangular reticles, which can be more circular or more rectangular, never linear. Metascutal triangle flange extends more or less over metascutellum; shape and number of reticles forming metascutal triangle round or elongated, triangle margins straight or convex. Males with golden yellow abdomen and either circular or oval pore plates.
