In 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) amended the toxic equivalency factors (TEF) for dioxins, furans and PCBs (https://www.who.int/ipcs/assessment/tef_values.pdf), as a result of which the table that presents these factors in Article 170 of the Food Health Regulations is out of date. These factors must be updated in order to ensure harmonization with WHO guidelines and for risk assessment purposes.
In addition, it was confirmed that there are errors in compound identification, which is why the correction is being made at this time. In light of this, the compounds misidentified in different parts of the document are highlighted in yellow in either the current table or the proposed table.
At present, Article 170 of the Food Health Regulations establishes compound identifications and their respective toxic equivalency factors.
This document includes the current table of toxic equivalency factors and the proposed table of toxic equivalency factors.
