Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Preservatives to Enable the Use of Potassium Acetate and Potassium Diacetate in Certain Meat and Poultry Products - Document Reference Number: NOM/ADM-0080
Background
Health Canada evaluated two food additive submissions, one seeking approval for the use of potassium acetate and potassium diacetate and the second for the use of only potassium acetate. In each submission, potassium acetate and potassium diacetate were requested for use as antimicrobial preservatives in various meat and poultry products.
Health Canada determined that the available scientific data support the safety and efficacy of potassium acetate and potassium diacetate for their requested use in these foods.
Health Canada published a proposal on 7 June 2016 (http://hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/consult/nop-avp-0017/document-consultation-eng.php), which was open for public comment for 75 days, for which no new scientific information was submitted. Since the conclusion of the evaluation remains as described in the proposal, Health Canada has modified the List of Permitted Preservatives (http://hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/securit/addit/list/11-preserv-conserv-eng.php), effective 21 October 2016.
The purpose of this communication is to publically announce the Department's decision in this regard and to provide the appropriate contact information for any inquiries or for those wishing to submit any new scientific information relevant to the safety of these food additives.
