In view of the presence of foot-and-mouth disease in Mauritius, Madagascar, a country free from the disease, has introduced strict measures to ensure its own protection. Foot-and-mouth disease can affect a number of animal species. All imports from Mauritius of live animals, and products, sub-products and foodstuffs of animal origin, including animal feed, have therefore been suspended.The dumping of swill and other waste from ships and aeroplanes originating in Mauritius is also prohibited.Surveillance at international and regional borders, ports and airports has been stepped up, with compulsory disinfection now required for all imported second-hand equipment and materials.
