Modification to the Lists of Permitted Food Additives to revise certain permitted uses of aluminum-containing food additives

Health Canada's Food and Nutrition Directorate is implementing most of the changes outlined in the Proposal to revise certain permitted uses of aluminum-containing food additiveshttps://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/food-nutrition/public-involvement-partnerships/notice-proposal-revise-certain-permitted-uses-aluminum-containing-food-additives/document.html) (reference number: NOP/ADP-0040). These changes aim to keep Canadian’s dietary exposure to aluminum within acceptable limits and to update permitted uses based on current industry needs, including the removal of uses that are no longer required. Certain proposed changes have been revised based on feedback received from industry. Most changes will come into effect on 20 October 2025, except for the removal of potassium aluminum sulphate as a firming agent in pickles and relishes. The modification to remove the permitted use of potassium aluminum sulphate as a firming agent in pickles and relishes will be made to the relevant list on 1 January 2028, in alignment with the next compliance date set out in the Food Labelling Coordinationhttps://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/food-nutrition/legislation-guidelines/policies/food-labelling-coordination/joint-policy-statement.html) Policy.Consequently, Health Canada will modify the Lists of Permitted Food Additiveshttps://www.canada.ca/en/health-canada/services/food-nutrition/food-safety/food-additives/lists-permitted.html) as described in the notice on 20 October 2025. These modifications will come into force on the day they are published in the lists.The purpose of the notice of modification (notified document) is to publicly announce the Department's decision in this regard and to provide the appropriate contact information for those wishing to submit an inquiry or new scientific information relevant to the safety of this food additive.
