The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is advising the public that it has prepared a pest risk analysis that evaluates the risks associated with importation of fresh pomegranate fruit from Peru into the continental United States. Based on the analysis, APHIS has determined that the application of one or more designated phytosanitary measures will be sufficient to mitigate the risks of introducing or disseminating plant pests or noxious weeds via the importation of fresh pomegranates from Peru. It is making the pest risk analysis available to the public for review and comment. Federal Register, Vol. 81, No. 49, Monday, 14 March 2016, pg. 13310.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is issuing a final rule prohibiting the use of certain cattle material to address the potential risk of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in human food, including dietary supplements, and cosmetics. FDA has designated the following items as prohibited cattle materials: Specified risk materials (SRMs), the small intestine from all cattle (unless the distal ileum has been removed), material from nonambulatory disabled cattle, material from cattle not inspected and passed, or mechanically separated (MS) (Beef). It is taking this action to minimize human exposure to certain cattle material that could potentially contain the BSE agent.
